A Good Place to Start
A good place to go for Recreational Vehicle policies are with the Insurance Company that you may already be working with. Find out what services they offer. You may often get a discount for having multiple policies with the same company. Such as motorcycle, boat, vehicle, RV, and Homeowners.
Liability Insurance
In the United States, many states require that all vehicles have at least Liability insurance in case of an accident. This includes insurance for your motorhome, trailer, fifth wheel, and tow vehicle. Insuring your recreational vehicle will protect both you and your finances. The policy you purchase should pay for any damages to your RV, medical expenses, and hotel accommodations, in the event of an accident. You will need to research which insurance companies are willing to issue policies on a RV and provide the correct amount of coverage.
The internet is another great place to go to check for policies that are available in your area. The internet will have details on policies that insurance companies offer in your area. You could consult with RV Facebook groups to get suggestions for RV policies they use. Make sure to look into the reliability of the insurance companies that are recommended to make sure you will be working with a company that is trustworthy and safe.
Options to Look for
Some companies will specifically offer motorhome insurance policies, but others will offer a variety of insurance options, including tow vehicle and trailer insurance. Be sure to find a policy that will cover the systems, appliances, furniture, and personal belongings. Fires can be a real possibility in a motorhome, make sure to have fire insurance. And make a list of all of the items you have in the RV, personal and built in appliances. This is especially important if you live Full Time in your RV. I do have to warn you, some insurance companies will not insure your RV if you live Full Time in it. Make sure to be honest upfront when you are signing up for the policy or risk finding out that you are disqualified for a payout if you get into an accident.
Reliability and Trustworthiness
Some companies will do business exclusively online as well. You can look for Recreational Vehicle insurance online and watch for the companies that have these policies available. Just know that not all of these groups will be well set up or reliable. Again, the reliability and trustworthiness of these companies is something that you should look into. Then again, you should know that some companies will have special online discounts for customers who reserve their policies online.
You can easily find information on these companies through reviews of their services. Check for online reviews about the insurance company, check with the Better Business Bureau. The only thing that I can warn you about internet searches is that many of these companies will sell your information, especially if you do not sign up for a policy with them, so be careful what information you share when you are researching online. If you share your phone number for instance, be prepared for a year of robo-calls from companies that you have never heard of. If you share your email address, the same thing, spam emails forever.
My Take On Insurance
At this point I can share what I use for my full time motorhome insurance. I was at CampingWorld and checked out the Good Sam recommended recreation vehicle insurance. The policy covers my appliances and personal belongings. I have a storage unit where I keep a record of my belongings in case I need it. I have read on Facebook RV pages where RV owners are paying half of what I pay, but they are not carrying coverage on their belongings. It all comes down to ‘pays his money takes his choice’.
South Dakota
A good place to check on RV coverage if you are a full-timer, is South Dakota, they have good rates on insurance, vehicle registration, and mail services.
Conclusion
Motorhome insurance is something that you should use for your motorhome. You can find this form of vehicle insurance through various different insurance companies around the country, including some online sites. You can even get discounts by going online or by sticking with the insurance company you may already have policies with. The best recommendation would be to start by calling your current automobile insurance agent, but know your options before making contact.
