Water Tanks

The Water System

Overview

There are three tanks on all RVs that comprise the water system:

The freshwater tank is considered City Water, meaning drinking water. This tank will supply water for showers, dish washing, and drinking water. Most RVs have a water fill connection that is labeled ‘City Water’.

The Grey water tank is where your sink and shower water empties in to.

The Black water tank is connected to your toilet.

Maintenance

  1. The freshwater tank needs to be sanitized every 6 months. You can use a solution of bleach and water to sanitize the tank, then rinse it out.
  2. If the RV is to be stored for a long period of time, or if you are in an extreme weather state, you must winterize the water system in order to keep it from getting damaged.
  3. The grey water tank should be sanitized on a yearly basis and should be empty when the RV is stored.
  4. The black water tank should be rinsed out when possible. Unless your RV comes with a built-in black water tank rinse, you can purchase a wand that attaches to a garden hose and is put down the toilet, it will spray jets of water to clean the inside of the tank. If you are traveling, many RVers put a 10-pound bag of ice and 5 gallons of water in the black water tank, the ice cleans the side of the tank and frees up the sensors.

Recommended

  1. Water Hose made for drinking water, for colder climates have a heated hose

  3. Happy Camper $30 to $60 according to size ordered (18 or 64 treatments)
