Generator
Overview
RV generators are usually built in on most motorhomes, fifth wheel trailers and larger trailers that have cabinets that a generator will fit in. If you enjoy boondocking or need to be self-contained, you can get a portable generator that is quiet enough to not disturb other campers.
Maintenance
- Follow the recommendations in the manual that came with your generator
- Check the oil every eight hours
- Change the oil when needed according to use.
- When you change the oil, be sure to clean the spark arrestor and the air filter.
- Add a gasoline stabilizer on each fill up
- If the generator is not going to be used on a regular basis, use Stabil in the gas tank to preserve the gas
- If the generator is not going to be used on a regular basis, start it every six months and run it until it gets hot, this will keep the carburetor from getting gummed up and the oil from going bad
Recommendations
- If you do not have a built-in generator, most people recommend a Honda 2000 generator, they are very quiet. If you require more than 2000 Watts, you can get two Hondas with a parallel hook up.
- What I use is a Predator 3500 from Harbor Freight
- Solar is way to charge your batteries without having to run a generator, but there is a high cost to solar if you plan to use a lot your appliances.
Cost
- Honda 2000 generator $1100 2- Hondas $2200
- 2. Predator 3500 Generator $900
